The history of the castle: A connection between Denmark and Sweden

Kronborg Castle is not only part of Denmark's history, but also Sweden's. Sweden's connection to Kronborg Castle is closely linked to historical events and political relations between Denmark and Sweden over the centuries. Due to the castle's strategic location on the Sound, it was an important part of the defense of Denmark against Swedish attacks and as a checkpoint for shipping in the area.

The history of the castle began in 1420, when Erik of Pomerania erected Krogen - a fortress designed to control shipping to Elsinore and collect the Sound Toll. A strategic position that contributed to a thriving trade in the city, thanks to the revenue from the tolls. As a result, Elsinore became widely known and recognized.

In 1574, the castle was built by Frederik the 2nd, and since then it has been a popular destination for tourists and locals alike in North Zealand. Kronborg Castle is not only known for its aesthetics and architectural beauty, it was also a key influence on Shakespeare's famous drama, Hamlet, which was written in 1603. The castle actually provides the setting for the action in the drama, and it's not hard to understand why Shakespeare was inspired by the unique Renaissance castle.
