Experience history
at Kronborg Castle
The reason why Kronborg Castle is one of the most popular sights in Elsinore is partly due to the fact that the castle is on UNESCO's World Heritage List of sites considered inalienable to humanity. The castle is located right next to the Sound and offers, in addition to its unique location, also an exciting history.
In 1420, Erik of Pomerania built a fortress, called Krogen, from which ships sailing to Elsinore could be monitored and at the same time a so-called health tax was collected from ships passing through the fortress.
Subsequently, Elsinore became known far and wide because the Sound Toll contributed to a large amount of trade in the city. Around 150 years later, in 1574, Frederik II built Kronborg Castle, as we know it today. Kronborg Castle, as we know it today, and which since then has been a favorite excursion destination in North Zealand - first for show and later for a real visit. Kronborg Castle is, in addition to being an aesthetic and architectural gem, also known from Shakespeare's world-famous drama, Hamletfrom 1603.
Shakespeare drew inspiration from the unique Renaissance castle, and Kronborg is the setting for the events that unfold in the drama.
